Our story
Khumbulani exists because children who cannot safely stay at home need somewhere safe to go — close to the community they know.
Why we exist
Sometimes a child cannot stay at home safely — because of neglect, abuse, abandonment or a family crisis. When that happens, the child needs more than a bed. They need adults who will look after them, keep them safe and help them feel secure again while a plan is made for their future.
Khumbulani Children's Place of Safety was started to meet that need here in Khayelitsha, so that children can be cared for close to their community, language and culture.
Growing with the community
Our work has always depended on the people around us. Neighbours, volunteers, local organisations, social workers, donors and partners all help us care for children and support their families.
Where we are today
Today, Khumbulani Children's Place of Safety operates from Town Two in Khayelitsha. The work still depends on the same thing it always has: caring adults who are committed to keeping children safe, supported by neighbours, volunteers, donors and partners.
Help us keep children safe
Your support helps Khumbulani Children's Place of Safety care for and protect children in Khayelitsha.
