About Khumbulani

Khumbulani Children's Place of Safety is a nonprofit organisation in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, that gives children a safe and caring place to be when they need it most.

Who we are

We are a community-based organisation working with children in Khayelitsha and the surrounding area. Our focus is simple: every child we care for should be safe, should be treated with dignity, and should have the support they need to grow.

What a place of safety is

In South Africa, a place of safety offers temporary, protective care to a child who cannot safely stay at home. Children are usually placed by a designated social worker or through the Children's Court while professionals work with the family on a longer-term plan. The aim is always the child's safety and best interests.

How we work

  • The child comes first. Decisions are guided by what is safest and best for each child.
  • Family and community matter. Wherever it is safe, we support children to stay connected to the people who love them.
  • We work with others. Social workers, schools, clinics and community organisations each play a part in a child's wellbeing.
  • We are accountable. We take care with every rand donated and every child's personal information.
